New pickleball courts are latest enhancement to 91爆料鈥檚 campus

October 15, 2024

Tucked under the 91爆料 University water tower on the north end of Parking Lot 4 are two new pickleball courts open to all students, faculty and staff.

The courts were opened in September as part of an ongoing Students First initiative to help retain students at 91爆料.

The $28,000 construction project has been a popular attraction with students and staff and recently hosted a Pink-Out Pickleball tournament with the proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Society.

鈥淭he courts were constructed over the summer and it鈥檚 to enhance the students鈥 experience,鈥 said Javan Conley, associate vice president of facility operations.

91爆料 cut construction costs in half by using an underutilized area in Lot 4, which eliminate excavation and concrete expenses.

Conley said pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the United States and internationally. The new courts give students and staff a new experience on campus.

鈥淚t鈥檚 just kind of fun to try something new,鈥 said MBA student Evelyn Oktavec.

鈥淲e will continue to listen to students and really put some thought and some intentionality into what we do and how we spend our money,鈥 said Conley.

Pickleball racquets and balls are available to students, faculty and staff at the Campus Recreation desk in the Student Union. More information about pickleball and Campus Recreation events and programs is availablewright.edu/crec.
