91���� University welcomed dozens of Latino middle school and high school students from around Raider Country for two week-long camps to learn about STEM and what 91���� can offer them.

“Exposing students in the local community to not only what we have to offer here at 91���� in terms of our majors and our resources but what they’re capable of,” said Catherine Hernandez-Hogan, assistant director of the Latino Center at 91����.

Twenty middle school students participated in the Latino Center Middle School STEM Day Camp from May 28-31. The free camp featured daily STEM activities and lessons to help the students strengthen their skills in math fundamentals. At the conclusion of the camp, each student received a completion certificate and a professional photograph.

“It was really fun and a really great experience because I got to learn more about myself and the STEM community,” said Emma Sandoval, an eighth grader at Tecumseh Middle School.

Twenty high school students learned important college success strategies and tips for career readiness during the Latino Center High School Summer Day Camp from June 3-7. Students experienced micro-writing and math prep sessions and met with representatives from each college at 91����.

“I think a camp like this is a really good opportunity for young students who may feel like a journey into college is unrealistic for them,” said Felipe Perez, a senior marketing major at 91���� who volunteered at the camp.

This was the second consecutive year the Latino Center partnered with all six 91���� colleges in getting students in local area career ready and college ready via summer programs.
